RxNorm

Look up U.S. clinical drugs in RxNorm, the National Library of Medicine's standard drug names: find a drug's RxCUI from a name or another code, get its ingredients, brands, forms and NDCs, check an NDC, and explore drug classes with RxClass.

Actions

Steps a workflow can run in RxNorm.

  • Find concepts by nameFind the RxNorm concept for a drug name, such as 'Lipitor 10 MG Oral Tablet' or 'atorvastatin', and get its RxCUI (the number the other actions take), full name and term type. Matches the exact name, or the name normalized to ignore word order, case and plurals.
  • Find approximate matchesFind the drugs whose names come closest to what was typed, even misspelled, abbreviated or out of order (e.g. 'zocor 10 mg'), best match first, each with its RxCUI, RxNorm name, term type and score.
  • Get spelling suggestionsGet the drug names RxNorm knows that are spelled like a misspelled one, e.g. 'ambien' for 'ambienn'.
  • Get drug productsList every drug product for an ingredient, brand or drug name: the clinical and branded drugs with their strengths and forms, and generic and branded packs, each with its RxCUI and the name used on prescriptions.
  • Find concepts by codeFind the RxNorm concepts another vocabulary's code stands for: an NDC, an ATC code, a SNOMED CT concept, an FDA application number (NDA, ANDA), a UNII, a DrugBank id and more.
  • Find brands by ingredientsFind the brand names made of exactly the given ingredients, e.g. Zyrtec-D for cetirizine and pseudoephedrine.
  • Get conceptGet a current RxNorm concept's name, synonym and term type from its RxCUI.
  • Get concept propertiesGet everything RxNorm records about a concept: its names and synonyms, its codes in other vocabularies (NDA number, FDA label id...), attributes such as strength, prescribability and controlled-substance schedule, and the vocabularies that list it.
  • Get related conceptsGet the concepts of chosen term types related to a concept, e.g. a branded drug's ingredient (IN), brand name (BN) and generic equivalent (SCD), or every branded drug (SBD) of an ingredient.
  • Get all related conceptsGet every concept related to a concept, of every term type: its ingredients, brand names, dose forms, components, clinical and branded drugs and packs.
  • Get concept historyFind out whether an RxCUI is still current, or was retired or remapped (and to what), when it was active, and what it is made of: ingredients and strengths, and dose forms. Works for RxCUIs that no longer exist.
  • Get NDCsGet the National Drug Codes (NDCs, the codes on U.S. drug packages) of a concept: the current ones, or every one ever linked to it with the RxNorm releases it was linked in.
  • Get NDC statusCheck a National Drug Code: whether it is active, obsolete or unknown to RxNorm, which drug it belongs to now, and which drugs it belonged to before.
  • Get NDC propertiesGet packaging and labelling for a National Drug Code, or for every NDC of a drug or FDA label: the package description, labeler, marketing category and status, and the pill's colour, shape, size and imprint.
  • Get drug classesGet the classes a drug belongs to, by its name or RxCUI: its ATC class, pharmacologic class, mechanism of action, the diseases it may treat or must not be used with, and more, each with the source that says so.
  • Find drug classesFind drug classes by name, as a whole name or synonym (e.g. 'HMG CoA reductase inhibitors') or by words the name contains (e.g. 'statin'), optionally of chosen kinds, each with the class id the other class actions take.
  • Get class membersList the drugs in a drug class, e.g. every statin in ATC class C10AA or every drug that may treat a disease. The source that defines the class is used unless you choose another.
  • Get class treeGet every class under a drug class, all the way down, each with its parent and depth, e.g. the statins, fibrates and others under ATC class C10.
  • Get class ancestorsGet the classes a drug class sits under, up to the top of its hierarchy, with each link from a class to its parent, e.g. C10AA under C10A under C10 under the cardiovascular system.
  • List class typesList the kinds of drug class RxClass has (ATC classes, pharmacologic classes, mechanisms of action, diseases...), each with the source that defines it.
