Climate TRACE

Look up independent estimates of greenhouse gas emissions from Climate TRACE, which tracks them with satellites and AI: totals for any country, state, county or city by year, month and sector, countries ranked, and the biggest emitting power plants, oil and gas fields, mines and other facilities, with who owns them.

Steps a workflow can run in Climate TRACE.

  • Get country emissionsGet a country's emissions for a year: the total, its rank among all countries, its share of the world, emissions per person and the change on the year before, split by month, sector and subsector. Narrow it to one gas, sector or subsector.
  • Get country emissions by yearGet a country's emissions year by year, with its world rank and emissions per person each year, the change from the first complete year to the last and its peak year. Covers the last 10 years unless you pick others.
  • Rank countries by emissionsRank countries by their emissions over a year or several years added up, worldwide, on one continent or in a group such as the EU or the G20, with each country's share, emissions per person and change on the period before. Narrow it to a gas, sector or subsector, or to the countries you want to compare.
  • Get emissions for a region, state or cityGet the emissions of a state, province, county, city, continent, group of countries or the whole world for a year, split by month, sector and subsector. States, counties and cities start in 2021.
  • Get owner emissionsGet what the facilities a company (or other owner) owns emitted in a year, split by month, sector and subsector, worldwide or in one country. Find owner ids with 'Search owners'.
  • Find top-emitting sourcesList the biggest emitters for a year, such as power plants, oil and gas fields, mines, steel mills or a county's road traffic, worldwide or in a country, state, city, continent or group, for a sector, subsector or owner. Each has its emissions, location and, where published, its activity and capacity.
  • Get emission sourceGet one source, such as a power plant or a mine: what it is, where, who owns it, its rank in its subsector worldwide, how confident Climate TRACE is, and its emissions, activity and capacity year by year or month by month.
  • Search states, provinces and countiesFind states, provinces, counties, districts and countries by name, with the ids the emissions and source steps take. Names are the local ones, such as Bayern for Bavaria.
  • List states, provinces or countiesList the states or provinces of a country, or the counties and districts of a state, with their ids.
  • Search citiesFind cities by name, in a country, or both, with the ids the emissions and source steps take. A city is its whole urban area, towns around it included.
  • Search ownersFind companies and other owners of emission sources by name, with the ids 'Get owner emissions' and 'Find top-emitting sources' take.
  • List sectors and subsectorsList the sectors Climate TRACE splits emissions into, such as Power and Agriculture, each with its subsectors and their ids.
  • Get subsectorGet what a subsector is part of, whether it is estimated source by source or only country by country, and which organisations produce its estimates.
  • List countriesList the countries and territories Climate TRACE covers, with their 3-letter codes, continent and the groups they belong to: all of them, or one continent's or group's.
  • List groups of countriesList the groups of countries rankings and totals can be narrowed to, such as the EU, the G20, OPEC and the least developed countries, with their members.
