Triggers

Start a workflow when something happens in WoRMS.

  • WoRMS taxon added or changedRuns when a taxon is added to WoRMS or its record changes, such as a new species, a new combination or a name found to be a synonym. Optionally only within one group, such as a family.

Actions

Steps a workflow can run in WoRMS.

  • Find AphiaID by nameGet the AphiaID, WoRMS's permanent number for a taxon, of an exact scientific name. Says so when no taxon has the name, or when several do (then use Search taxa by name to choose).
  • Get taxonGet a taxon's WoRMS record by its AphiaID: its name and author, rank, whether the name is accepted (and the accepted name if not), its kingdom to genus, where it lives, and how to cite it.
  • Search taxa by nameFind taxa whose scientific name starts with, or is exactly, the text given, accepted and unaccepted names alike, each with its accepted name.
  • Search by common nameFind the taxa known by a common name in any language, such as killer whale or kabeljauw, with their scientific names.
  • Match namesMatch up to 50 scientific names to WoRMS with TAXAMATCH, which forgives misspellings (Gadus morua finds Gadus morhua). Each name comes back with its best match, how it matched, and the accepted name to use.
  • Get classificationGet a taxon's full classification, every rank from Biota down to the taxon itself (including suborders, superfamilies and the like), each with its AphiaID.
  • List child taxaList a taxon's direct children: the genera in a family, the species in a genus, and so on, in alphabetical order, accepted and unaccepted names alike.
  • List synonymsList every other name a taxon has been known by (synonyms, old combinations and misspellings), each with why it is not used.
  • List common namesList a taxon's common names, such as Atlantic cod or kabeljauw, with their languages, optionally in one language.
  • List distributionsList where a taxon is recorded, by sea area or country, with whether each record is reliable and, for introduced species, whether it is native or alien there.
  • List attributesList the traits WoRMS records for a taxon, such as body size, IUCN Red List category, functional group or listing in a directive, each with its qualifiers and a one-line summary.
  • List sourcesList the references WoRMS cites for a taxon, such as its original description, with page numbers, DOIs and links.
  • Get external IDsGet a taxon's id in another database WoRMS links to: ITIS, NCBI (GenBank), BOLD, FishBase, AlgaeBase, the IUCN Red List, Dyntaxa or the Global Invasive Species Database.
  • Find taxon by external IDFind the WoRMS taxon another database's id belongs to, such as an ITIS TSN or an NCBI Taxonomy ID. Says so when WoRMS links none.
  • List changed taxaList the taxa added to WoRMS or last changed in a period, oldest change first, such as names newly described, moved or found to be synonyms.
  • List taxa by rankList every taxon of one rank within a group, such as every species in a family or every genus in an order, however many ranks down.
  • List taxonomic ranksList the taxonomic ranks WoRMS uses in each kingdom, from Kingdom down to Forma, with the number WoRMS gives each rank.
  • List attribute definitionsList the traits WoRMS can record (body size, IUCN Red List category, functional group and more) and the qualifiers each one takes, with the value list each draws on.
  • List attribute valuesList the values an attribute can take, such as the IUCN Red List categories or the life stages, with their codes.
  • List taxa with attributeList the taxa that have a trait recorded, such as an IUCN Red List category or a body size, with their names and the trait's values.
